Default Shifter stuck in trans

I just bought a used transmission for my 2002 s2k. Once installed I noticed that finding 5th gear was near impossible and the lockout for reverse is not working...its like the shifter is stuck in the down position. I read about regreasing the shifter so I followed the DIY and I'm running into a problem. I removed the bolts that hold it in place and it wont release. I read its suppose to pop up at you and come out but it doesn't budge.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Has new clutch and flywheel which work fine...just missing lockout and goes right into reverse.

Thanks

Maybe try pulling the shifter, from one side to the other. To free the lever from the damaged shift ball. If no luck, then it's back to "hammer-mechanics." Gentle persuasion from a crowbar.

Good luck with that!

I've heard stories of the shifter being so gunked up with rust and crap down around the ball that its just stuck in there. You aren't the first to have removed all three bolts and the shifter not wanting to come out. Put one foot in the passenger floorboard, one foot in the driver floorboard, grab that sucker and give it the good old college try. If you're a scrawny white kid like me, enlist your burly Turkish crossfit friend to do it for you.

Wonder if you could attach a slide hammer puller to the shift lever? Maybe better than a crowbar.

Prolly best to put roof away. Hate to launch one-self through the canvas.

I don't see why not. Once the retaining plate is unbolted, there should be nothing holding the shifter down. It should pop up on it's own as there is a (or should be) a spring doing just that.

All great ideas. I have modified a harmonic balancer puller to fit on the shifter nob and i'm going to try to crank it out...been staring at it for a week now and still scared to do it...lol.

I'm 175 and all my weight can't pull it up...so im skurred = P

Honestly, pull the assembly apart and clean it all up. Will fix the problem and improve the shifting.
