Default Side pipe on Exhaust

What does the pipe about half way down the exhaust do that sticks out side ways...? About 8-10 inches long. Why is this there?

Its a resonator. It cancels out the high frequencies in the exhaust note.

It is a Helmholtz filter (band stop). It prevents the "droning" sound in the exhaust.

Wouldn't this be a good idea to put it in the after market exhuast?

I think so. Actually, I thought the Mugen exhaust did have it...

Some of the Amuse exhausts have it.

Although I would want one on an aftermarket exhaust, I'm sure there would be some level of restriction it would cause just from the pipe not having a consistant, smooth wall.
