Default Smokey Exhaust

I have a year old S2k with 15000km on the clock. Under hard acceleration it blows smoke from the exhaust.

Honda main dealer told me that it is normal and they all do it, citing two reasons. 1) It is unburnt fuel when V.Tec kicks in and 2) it is old carbon deposits being burnt off as engine gets hot.

Both are I guess plausible, however, in relation to 1) I thought these engines were very efficient so how much unburnt fuel there would be I am not sure (plus isn't that white smoke?) and in relation to 2) how much carbon can there on an engine of this age?

Is anyone else's car smokey under hard acceleration and is this normal or is the dealership just making excuses to get out of dealing with it under warranty?

I've watched many and have never seen that behavior.. I'd bet something is wrong.

I have nearly 20,000 km on mine and it does NOT blow black or blue smoke.

What color is the smoke? Whitish or dark blackish?

I was wearing dark shades!! What with it being +35 degrees here (as opposed to -10 where you are)

It was on the browny/blue side of things though - certainly looked like oil to me!

The S2000's will emit some smoke from the tail pipes especially while travelling fast cresting a hill. Oil under the valve covers seeps into the blow-by line which is connected to the induction boot. It is possible that this is happening, however, it should not be blowing much oil under these circumstances. Make sure the oil is not over filled. If you drive extremely rough, possibly consider a compression test.

Thanks - was on the flat that I noticed it at about 7000rpm - am thinking that a compression test is the way to go - what should the compression be?

Anyone know why there are two blow-by lines on the S2000?

There aren't 2. The one that comes from the PCV valve dumps pressure into the intake manifold after the TB. The other one you see is actually a "fresh air" breather pipe that goes to the valve cover from part of the intake before the TB. This is most likely part of the "pulsed secondary air injection system".

Gotchya. I just thought it was a pressure relieve thing also since I'm getting oil dumping out through that hose into my airbox. But I guess it's meant to be a one-way system, but works the other way when oil sloshes up there.

Thanks,
