if you can pick up a head cheap, do so. you're gonna have to remove the head to helicoil it anyway... (so foreign particles wont get into cylinder)

I blew a sparkplug out of the head, taking some threads with it.

Helicoiled as a temp fix.

You DON'T want to do this. The plug won't seat perfectly and will be at a different height in the combustion chamber. Plus, if you're SC, you'll have to replace plugs more frequently anyway. The helicoil won't hold up.

Save yourself the headache and buy a used head for under $500.
Have the dealership upgrade the retainers to AP2 (if an AP1 head).

A machine shop can repair it. They will install a threaded insert that was designed for this, not a heilcoil. It is solid where the heilcoil is not.

option A is a used head.

Instead of a cheap helicoil u can fix it witha durable TIMESERT

there's a special package for sparkplug holes

I thought there was a tool you can use to rethread a stripped hole, but it can only be done once?

I would think a timesert would be better for an iron head. Expansion of aluminum might be tricky.

Having a machine shop rework the head might be cheaper by a few hundred, but I think the peace-of-mind of a new (used) head would be worth it.

No, there are Timesert inserts that are for aluminium use.
I have done this twice on 2 S2000 heads. One engine is N/A tuned and used for racetracks - no problems!

Please don't use Helicoil!! Timesert is completly different and much more reliable.
