Default spun engine rod bearing

Ok, so my bro spun an engine rod bearing today while in vtec so we assume the dmg is the worst. What should be the cheapest route he can take to get this fixed? Should he rebuild the motor and fix it or should he replace the motor with new or used. he has an ap1 so if he were to buy an ap2, he would have more reliability and power with the cost of 8k rev limit we have 2,000$ to work with but can have around 3,500$ any suggestions?

First thing first, you have lost nothing by stripping it down and seeing just what damage has been done and then go from there.

I just put a bearing in an s2k after a spun bearing incident, car is fine. Fast and cheap.

Was your oil low?

His oil does not register on the dipstick so the oil level is unsure unless we drain it from the car and measure that way.

We have family members who are very motor savy and would help us do the parts installation but our concern is what else was damaged in the process. The motor is severly loud post 3k rpms and we all agree it is the sound of a spun bearing.

Billman, Would it just be possible to replace the block, crankshaft and bearings and be done or is there more to it?

So the crankshaft was fine, only the bearing was toast?
Any shavings in the pan?

Oh you'd be done...that sounds excessive. Your block is likely fine. Your crankshaft MIGHT be fine. Depends on how much you keep starting it and running it. Keep it to a minimum.

Plenty of bearing shavings in the pan. Crank was ok. It was not run much after the knock, and the bearing halves remained together, instead of riding on top of each other and allowing rod to crank contact.

if its not on the dipstick at all, i'd say he is low on oil.

gotta keep checking your oil atleast every other fill up!

You cant just remove the pan and replace bearings folks.
Metal shavings, big or small, may definitely remain in any and all of the oil passages present in the motor.
