at around 6k kms i started to notice a sqealing sound coming from under my hood. it only comes when i'm at 2k rpm or less. it isn't there when i start the car, but once i've started on my way it comes back by the time i've reached the first traffic light. the funny thing is that my buddy just got a 06 accord and once he hit 6000 kms, he started getting the sound. does anyone know what this is and does it just go away or is there something i have to get done. i've taken it to honda and my personal mechanic and nobody has a clue.

 

Since your car doesn't have a timing belt, that can't be your problem. Your car has a timing chain.

If it's a high-pitched squeal, it is likely your serpentine belt or one of the pulleys it rides on. Odds are good that it is coming from your belt tensioner, although it is possible it's coming from your alternator. Pay attention to whether it is happening when you have any particular accessory on like your A/C or defroster. Since the compressor puts a fair amount of load on the belt when it kicks in, it may suggest that you have a weak or failing tensioner pulley.

If you only have 6000 Kms your car is still under warranty. If you can re-create the problem when you take it into the dealer, let them hear it and fix it. If you can't re-create it when you take it in, then make a recording when you're driving and play it for them.

 

you took it to a honda dealership and to your "personal" mechanic, and they couldn't diagnose what sounds like a simple belt issue?

 

Belts are not covered by Honda. They are a wear item.
All the above information is good to help diagnose the noise.
Adding load with the electrical components (turn on head lights) and checking AC by turning on will help eliminate or confirm the source.
Pull the belt, check all the pullies, especially the idler, to make sure everything is good and replace the belt. That should eliminate the noise if it is from the drive belt.

 

i had the same problem. around 5K rpm i'll hear a faint to moderate squeel. actully it was more like a whistle. the sound came and went. dont know what it was or where it came from.

 

the sound is there regardless of whether the a/c is on or anything else. i've tried turning the a/c on/off, radio, headlights, flashers, pretty much all electrical devices and the sound remains constant. it's baffling to all that have tried to diagnose.

thanks for the suggestions, i'll let the honda technician know of the opinions you all have.

 

did you figure out what it was? did it resolve itself?
