Steering column "rubbing" noise
During parking, when turning the wheel several turns, a raspy, "Plasticky" sound coming from where the steering wheel attaches to the column, as if the base of the steering wheel was rubbing against something.
Any thoughts about origin? Fix?
Thanks

Track the path of the plastic on the part of the steering wheel that moves past the part of the steering column that doesn't move. You may see where it's touching. If this is the case, you may be able to adjust it slightly or if it's still under warranty, let them do it. If no warranty, you might consider taking some sand paper and widening the gap in that location.
If you don't see anything on the outside, you could have something on the inside of the steering column that turns past a stationary part of the mechanism. This would be more difficult to find an resolve. I'm thinking it "could" be the "clock spring" inside the steering wheel.

On gross inspection, there does not appear to be anything obviously rubbing back there.
I remember many years ago, on a VW bug, it made a very similar type of noise and the mechanic at the dealership just squirted some oil straight into the gap...voila! Granted, this was a very simple, purely "mechanical" steering system, no airbags or sensors to worry about.
What do you think? Could it hurt anything if we squirt/spray a little lube in there?
Thanks
Daniel

Ah, right.
Here's a repair manual section for the steering column.http://www.gotspork.com/01S2000SteeringWheel.pdf
