Default Steering questions

I did a search, and didn't find anything, so thought I'd post here.

I have, what I feel, is a problem with my steering. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but the best I can describe is that the steering feels as if I have power assist on at all times. After making a turn, the steering wheel does not seem to want to "pop" back to center. There does not seem to be any resistance.

The car does not seem to "track" well - it feels unstable and a bit "darty".

The car is within factory alignment specs.

Can anyone shed some light as to what the problem is?

I take it the EPS light is not on, or any other warning lights?

You say the alignment is good, so scratch that. Have ya checked your tire pressures lately?

Low caster will also take the "self centering" tendency out of the steering. If you had 0 caster, the car would track dangerously back and forth with out warning.

I checked tire pressure. I have 30 PSI in all tires.

I'll check the alignment specs again, but believe they are within factory specs.

I have 255/40/17 inch on the rear, and 225/45/17 on the front. I was told that the factory alignment specs is what was needed for this size wheel/tire setup. Agree?

Factory recommendations are for 32 psi. I've got the same tire sizes as you and I'm running 35 psi. I've always felt that a wider tire needs more pressure to keep the center of the tire tread planted. In any case, 30 psi is too low. This may or may not have any bearing on your steering issue.

Exactly.. many techs have trouble getting the desirable amount of caster as they concentrate on camber. If you have less than 6 degrees the feel is not great and many of us shoot for 6.45 or more.
