Default Steering Wheel "Off"

Has anyone adjusted their steering wheel and if so how difficult is it? My S2K is approximately one year old. The other day I noticed, while driving straight, my steering wheel looked like I would be turning slightly left (maybe left steering wheel spoke down about a quarter to half an inch from level). No pull/alignment problems to note. Still drives great just one of those detail things. If it is a real pain I'll live with it, or let the dealer deal with it - if there is not to much they can screw up. Thanks in advance.

If it really bothers you, have the dealer do it under warranty. It is not a quick and easy job. Involves removing the airbag, steering wheel puller. Then moving the the steering wheel one spline over on the center shaft and seeing if this will cure it. For all you know, one spline over might take you too far the other way.

Honestly, the steering wheel gear has a larger spline on it to locate the wheel onto one spot. You cant move it over one notch as noted. Usually this happens when the car is aligned. Mine was like that when it was new and so the dealer fixed it. Basically you should take it in for an alignment at some point and bring it up to them. If the wheel is sitting to the right, then they just have to adjust both tie-rods to the the right to straighten the wheel out. It's no biggie at all. You could do it yourself if you had a little patience. Just make sure to move both tie-rods the same amount as to not mess up your alignment.

Actually the error and fix is most likely at the steering shaft joint. This is disconnected anytime the transmission is removed and takes care to get it back on exactly the right spline. If your car had the clutch TSB or other reason to pull the transmission this may be the cause of the cocked wheel. It can be fixed at that joint much faster than fooling with the steering wheel or other adjustments.

Exactly. I got the same problem after the clutch TSB, and when I brought it up to the dealer again, the guy immediately knew what's the issue and fixed it in half day. (I think don't really need half day for the process.)

it's an EASY fix to adjust your steering wheel. no need to remove anything...you can reach the joint inside the hood, remove a couple bolts, realign the wheel and bolt it back together. took me about 15 mins with the help of a friend to hold the wheel straight while i rebolted the joint. That includes the time to jack up the car, put down jack stands and find the joint and bolts for the first time.

To all - thanks for all the replies and possible solutions. Since I am a Reservist and away from home (and tools, etc.) I think I will let the dealer tackle this - if at all. If their desire is to do the steering wheel pull I think I'll leave well enough alone for now. If the solution is as Unabageler suggested, I might let them try that or the tie rod issue.

Judging from your S2KI age, I would guess that you have not had any repairs done that would have changed your steering wheel alignment. I would guess that your suspension alignment is not quite right. I have an '02, and my suspension alignment remains in a constant state of "hosed". One week my steering wheel is cocked a bit to the left when driving in a straight line, and the next it may be cocked a bit to the right. A poor alignment won't necessarily make the car pull.

Gernby,

Thanks, does an alignment solve anything or is it one of those things where you hit the next set of railroad tracks and it is off again? My S2K as well as not pulling also tracks straight so I'm not sure it is an alignment problem. Probably one of those things I should just live with as the cure (from a dealer) might be worse than the "off" look.
