Default Steering wheel shakes while stopped by itself

So I looked through the forum search for about an hour with no results but I can’t be the only person this has happened to. I saw a YouTube video with the same problem titled s2000 ghost steering... I can sit in my car and if I slightly turn my steering wheel it goes back and forth about a half inch and just keeps going until I stop it with my hand in which case it will stop. I slightly turn it again and let go it just keeps going back and forth for as long as I let it sit there or until I literally put my hand on it to stop it. If anyone knows what’s happening I’d be happy to know or if there’s a thread I couldn’t find you could direct me to? I’d appreciate it!

Thanks in advance

Maybe, you need to reset your EPS torque sensor?

S2000 EPS steering wheel hunting is direct result of loss of VSS signal.

Does the car have a yellow box?

Billman, I now have no power assist. I found the thread to get the eps to give codes, used the paper clip but where I’ve checked to be sure all the plugs were tight, it’s giving 6 to maybe 8 codes! Is there anyway to reset all the codes (possibly caused by me unplugging and plugging things back in) to see what actual codes come up? Like reset it and see what new codes get thrown If that makes sense?

Mine has done this 3 times since I owned it, all three after autox runs while sitting running in grid. But, it stopped right away and I can never reproduce it to troubleshoot. May just go through all the wiring and connectors in the off season this winter.

Best place to look is probably behind the driver's kick panel, and/or under the bottom door sill trim. You're looking for something that's obviously been spliced into the wires to/from the ECU.

Just to be clear, the so-called "yellow box" or "yellow jacket" devices aren't necessarily yellow. They are electronic mods that hack the VSS signal in order to correct the speedo/odo after any change to the final gear ratios (e.g., by changing diff gears, swapping AP1/AP2 transmissions, or using super-tall or super-short wheels/tires). Because they splice into the VSS & ECU wiring, they tend to be sensitive to weak ground connections, which can cause a variety of intermittent symptoms (EPS, ABS, cruise, speedo/odo, etc.).

Thanks, for that explanation of the "yellow box." And how it wires into the ECU. Must have been yellow at one time?

Kinda like the "black box" in airplanes. They are actually orange-red, these days.

Naming of technical things can have unusual origins. Look at how we call the muffler bypass the uk mod. Why did that name stick? Its not really descriptive of what it is. But the name works, and everyone in the community knows what it means...

I’ve been building this car for 3 years. I’m almost finished and need to put bumpers on and the car is finished. However, 1.5 years later the eps has now went from what I posted above to absolutely nothing with the eps light. Is there a test for just the torque sensor?
