Default Stinky!

My air conditioning system is kicking out a really nasty mold smell when I first turn it on each day. Does it when I let it cool down for an hour or so too.

Funk in the hepa filter? It's been rather soggy in Dallas for the past week.

It is probably condensation building up in the duct work from all the humidity and rain we have had lately. Try to remember to use the A/C for a few minutes every day to keep the humidity out of the system and it should help a lot.

I have never found a really effective way to get rid of the smell. Usually I spray a little Ozium in the air intake while the A/C is in Fresh mode.

Crank the fan on high with fresh air, then spray some Lysol disinfectant spray into the fresh air intake of the ventilation system. This should suck the Lysol into the air system and kill the molds etc. that have built up in there. Don't be afraid to use a lot of Lysol, it may take a few applications.

Think twice before using Lysol.

I've seen (smelled) the results of it sprayed into the air intake of cars before. The entire car can reek of Lysol for weeks, yuck!

I get a brief moldy smell sometimes too, but that's better than a constant disinfectant odor in the car.

Most car manufacturers have specific products for killing vent system odors. I too have heard, though, that they are no better than Lysol.

They sell the replacement filter at HandA-accessories.com for $24. I'll have to check mine and see how dirty it is.

Generally, all you have to do is make sure the condensation is dried up before you turn the car off and stop the airflow. If you use your A/C for your commute, for example, just turn the system to vent (A/C off) for a couple of miles before you get home. That's always taken care of smelly A/C systems for me.

Get two clothes pins, one for you and one for the passenger. Squeeze them open using your index finger and thumb. Put them over the two holes on the distal end of your nose. Release gently.
Critical Note: Don't forget to breath thru mouth.
