Question Stock Exhaust - SUS409 or SUS304?

Is the OEM exhaust made out of stainless steel grade 304 like aftermarket systems or is it 409 grade (like the HKS Hi Spec L or dual Hi Power systems)? could it be neither of those and be mild steel?

Don't know the grade of the OE system. After 8 years on the car with no corrosion it's some grade of stainless but I assume you're looking for an aftermarket exhaust.

My Tanabe Medalion Touring aftermarket exhaust is 304 stainless. The tubing and other components are thinner (lighter) than the OE system.
What's Better, T409 or T304 Stainless Steel Exhaust Components? The most frequently used stainless steel in performance exhaust system is T409. Found in Magnaflow exhaust and many stainless mufflers, this mixture has enough chromium and nickel to resist corrosion. But, it lacks the strength to be used for fasteners. Next up in the ring for corrosion resistance and all-around toughness is the T304 steel used in Borla exhaust and Cobb exhaust. This is the highest quality stainless steel used in the automotive world. It is most often found in exhaust tips. Super tough and nearly impervious to rusting, T304 has around 20% chromium and 10% nickel content in the alloy. In fact, the ferrous metal content is so low that magnets won't stick to it, making identifying T409 from T304 very easy.

It's magnetic so probably some lower grade ferritic steel, could very well be 409.

Had never tried a magnet test....but my guess was 400 series as well.

Maybe the resonator is 300 series and the piping is 400? Honda exhausts are notably better at corrosion resistance than other manufacturers.

Idk...put a magnet on it.

Everything is magnetic except the tips and the inlet/outlet sides on the middle resonator.

Correct. HKS Hi Power single is on my radar. Dual systems pulling me that way too mainly for the look... Keeping my options open with the stock system though. It's heavy so it may not be worth modding (UK mod, canisters to replace the oval mufflers, etc).

Was my guess as well. Didn't know about the magnetic test though.
If only Honda got Mugen to make their system standard fare for the S2K

Well... it does sort of rust.
After 10 years of DD in all kinds of weather & salty roads in winter.

Don't forget about 321 stainless, mainly used in racing applications/custom exhausts.

Quite unsightly. Sad to think it is OEM
Anyway this is why the aftermarket for S2000's is booming!
