Default Stupid clutch question

Real quick guys,

what makes some clutches harder to push in than others? I drove my friends Cobra yesterday and I think I tore a ligament trying to push the damn clutch down! Every car seems different and last time I got a clutch replaced in my Civic, it dropped straight to the floor with ease. What effects this? Can the clutch petal be softened?

The clutch friction disk is held in contact to the FW and PP by springs. It is the strength of the springs and the leverage provided to the pedal mechanism that determine the force required.
