Default Stupid diff question... re: limited slip

How much noise and vibration is a properly functioning limited slip diff (on the S2000) supposed to make? Mine judders and makes a fair amount of noise whenever I put the power down coming out of a corner. It just struck me that during car reviews (in car videos) I never seem to hear such a noise or vibration when the reviewer is driving the car hard. This kind of makes me question whether or not the behavior of my car is normal. I'm running fairly grippy 255 width tires in back, so tire traction isn't really a problem. The diff also makes no unusual sounds when going straight.

Opinions?

Do you hear the noise when your turning and the car is in neutral

No... the only time I get the noise/vibration is when I'm in gear and powering out of a corner.

The stock LSD makes no noise or vibration when it is in good working order. You could have an aftermarket LSD

This worries me... I haven't been told anything about an aftermarket LSD in this car. I'm the third owner and have had the car for about 3 years. Fluids have been changed regularly. No issues really, but the loud diff is annoying and at my track day yesterday I didn't feel like I was putting the power down as effectively as I could have coming out of the corners.

Is there a chance that the diff is faulty? It has had Amsoil 75W-90 diff fluid in it for 2 years and 13k miles.

If you are feeling vibration during acceleration out of corners it could be the axle cups wearing out. Try swapping them and see if this improves the vibrations. Also, what are the condition of the diff mounts? If they are worn there could be excess amounts of vibration.

It's possible that the axle cups are the problem... However I get relatively little vibration while accelerating straight.

If you are getting any vibration accelerating, going straight then the issue is axle related.

My diff exhibits the same behavior on tight low-speed corners. Acts like it has a very tight/high-breakaway clutch type diff (it doesn't). It's done it for years, but might have worsened gradually over time now that I think about it. The racier T2R (which has some preload in it) is silky smooove under the same conditions.

Do you hear or feel the noise when your turning and the car is in neutra?l

If you have a thumping sound or feel in low speed turns with the car in neutral then, the LSD is your issue. There are 8 planetary gears inside the stock LSD that can chip or break/distort if you wheel hop the car when you launch.
