Default Stupid Question

Can I remove the oil filter without removing the oil first, or will lots of oil just pour out?

I ask because I did my oil but forgot to do the filter. I'd hate to throw away this new oil.

oil will pour out...unless you can balance your car vertically on the driver's side.

The oil filter is positioned above the oilpan. You will lose no more oil than you would if your oilpan was empty.

How many miles do you have on this oil filter? If you changed it less than 5000 miles ago and you're using the Honda PCX filter, I'd just leave it on. You really don't have to change the filter with each oil change.

The filter sits much higher than the pan so only the oil sitting in it and in the passage to it will come out. You can take it off and put a new one on its no big deal will just lose about a half quart that was in it.

ok I went and did it. Just a tiny bit of oil came out. It makes it easy to let it drain before I totally took it out. Thanks for the replies.

You should've just left the filter on until the next oil change and replaced it then.

Did this a month ago and only lost about 1/2 quart of oil.

You will only lose a little bit of oil. I had to do it to my other car just last week. And I lost maybe a 1/4 of a quart. No sweat!
