Default Synchros

I know honda changed the material that the synchros are made of in later models. I'm not sure if the change occured between ap1 and ap2 or in the 03 ap1.

My question is, will the upgraded synchros work in an ap1 tranny?

Thanks

i'm gonna say no, because the gear ratios are different.

If you want an upgrade!

Change for a Ap2 tranny and get 4.44 Gears!

For the price of labor to swap syncros (assuming they work and that you would not be doing the labor) you could get a used ap2 transmission and swap the whole thing. Then you would have shorter gears 1-4 and taller gears 5-6.

Edit: I know they changes the syncros for ap2, to single carbon ones I believe (from dual brass on 1-2, single on rest, could be wrong about these). But I think they may have added another layer (correct terminology??) to the 1st syncro.

The answer is that they did not change the materials but added a carbon coating on the syncros. The change is when they went to AP2. They will work on our cars, but you cannot buy them seperately. Honda will only sell the sycros with all the gears and shaft as one unit. If you order for an AP1, then it comes with AP1 gears. Total cost to replace all syncros: over $600. I already tried to do this on my car. Major on Honda.

I am rebuilding my tranny right now. There were no updates on the transmission from '01-'02 to '03. The sizes of the gears on the mainshaft and secondary shaft are different on the AP2, so they will not fit unless you modify by machining them down (which is VERY expensive). The good thing is that Honda DOES sell the 5-6 gear synchros by themselves with the updated sychros. You MUST buy the 1-2 and 3-4 gear SETS in order to get the carbon synchros. The AP2 synchros for 5-6 gear are the same on AP1 and AP2. All other are different, Honda was smart in knowing that 1-2 and 3-4 are going to go out quickly b/c of track days and auto x and everything else. If you have a hook up for OEM parts you could do it, like I am, but I build my own tranny's. You could get a AP2 tranny, but you always run a risk when buying a used transmission.

I rebuild mine for peace of mind, and we normally give 3 year war. as long as the transmission does not show signs of abuse. It's very easy for us to see it. Both sides has it's pros and cons. If you plan on keeping this car for awhile, I'd recommend rebuilding the tranny. If this is a car you plan on keeping, rebuild it with the updated sychros.

Good luck, and I might be able to take some pictures if I get a chance.

Honda back dated the change. If you buy a new set of gears now for an AP1 trany, it has they updated syncros.
