I had the black soot when my car was brand new. It went completely away after 600-700 miles.

I think most of the 'soot' comes from new tires. The original S02's were very bad when new.

I believe it was oil soot coming from the tail pipes before the rings were seated.

I bought my car used, with 32,000 miles on the odometer, and have NEVER seen any soot on the rear bumper. If it's "normal" then I'm missing something.

I have that soot going on like crazy. With 23,000 miles on the odometer. My car drinks oil like crazy too, and there's tons of carbon around and on the exhaust.

I'm sure there's soot there...mixed in with at least 6 months of road grime and dust...

seriously though - I don't think we can keep the stuff coming out of our tailpipe(s), esp since we run test pipes. The only thing I can think of that we could do is to prevent it from coming back around and landing on the bumper. Maybe a rear diffuser....
