Default Throttle Position Sensor

I need to replace my TPS to solve a throttle response problem. The catch is Honda says they don't sell the sensor by itself. You have to purchase the entire throttle body to the tune f over 600 bucks!

I have searched the wrecking yards for a replacement but S2000's are quire rare. I found a Prelude one that appears to have the correct values but the connector is pointing the wrong direction.

Doea anybody have any recommendations on where to go from here?

Thanks,
Joe Curry

If Honda offers you no relief you should consider an aftermarket TB. It shouldn't cost any more and you'll get a performance gain out of it, too. To me, Honda's just playing a game of blackmail. Can't you get them to just fix it under warranty?
Anyway, contact Mingster about the TB.

Unfortunately, Honda doesn't provide warranty on engines that were purchased from a wrecking yard. The engine and 6-Speed gearbox is now in a Triumph Spitfire autocross car.

I might consider an after market throttle body if I knew where I could get one. I have not found much in the way of performance parts for these engines yet because the limited production and newness of the cars.

Yes honda does not offer the sensor by it's self, but if you look at
the throttle sensor on your car their are breakoff bolts that hold the sensor on. You can grab then with small visegrips and unscrew them. So you could take the sensor off and replace it.
What is wrong with your sensor?

How do you know you have a problem? I've NEVER seen a TPS fail. They are a sealed potentiometer that are environmentally sealed. I would suspect a throttle response problem to be something else.

You can buy a TB at a yard and remove/reattach the sensor on it to yours if need be. Further, most high-end Honda TB's share the same bolt pattern. Look for an Integra Type R throttle body- the sensors should be the same and the bolt pattern is the same. I also believe the opening is the same diameter. For performance, though, I'd recommend a Spoon unit (larger diameter).

Although I haven't heard about TPS failure on S2K's I know of MANY failures in other machines. The root cause is usually vibration, often made worse by the sensor mounting. These are normally contacting sensors, as you say a simple potentiometer, and the resistive film is subject to wear at common locations (e.g. - idle, WOT). It is also likely a small % of S2K TPS have manufacturing defects that lead to early failure. The sliding contacts could have a crack from the forming process and they could fall apart in the field. Don't ask me how I know about that one!

Maybe this engine had excessive vibration (s/c ?). Or a power surge could "burn" a spot on the sensor (but what moron would hook up the power steering motor input to the sensor circuit...).

So what exactly is the problem with the TPS anyway?

I could not find an exact replacement but the OMNI-Power Replacement TPS Sensor TPS-B-01 works just fine. The connecting plug sits lower requiring a clip on the wiring harness to be unsnapped. This clip can be snapped back in after plugging in the TPS. The voltage should read about .5 volts between the center pin and ground (the bottom pin). The tps can rotate to adjust for voltage. I checked the voltage on the original part and it was .12 volts. I had to perform the

I believe a TPS from just about any Honda will work, as long as it has the same connector. The fact that the connector is in the opposite direction doesn't matter. I was having drivability issues and swapped a TPS from either my 90 Prelude or a late model 3.2CL. I'm not sure which it was, I just had it sitting around. It worked fine. As long as it's set to approx. .45v at idle and 4.5v at wot you should be fine.
