Billman,
I hope you don't mind if I pick your brain on something. My car has been making a noise for a little while now and I want to try to figure it out so I can address it. The noise only occurs when I am at 5500 rpms. The best I can describe it is a "cha, cha, cha" type sound. I believe it is coming from the engine bay. My first though is that it may be the timing chain tensioner, but I don't know what that sounds like and if it only does it at a certain rpm. Could you answer that? If that is not indicative of that problem, have you ever heard of any other problem that makes that type of noise at a specific rpm? On a side note, I have a buddy club spec 3 single exhaust. I thought that maybe at that rpm it is producing a specific frequency that is rattling something on the car. Thanks for you help!

Timing chain tensioners sound like rattling chains in the block. Mine were at idle or when I revved it a little and let off of the gas. Took months for it to be consistent enough for the dealer to finally find it. Did not always make the noise, but eventually was happening more often than not when I started the car. Was an extended warranty item. My 2002 has 50k miles on it.

It may seem like it sometimes, but billman doesn't live here on the boards. Also sounds in general are very difficult to diagnose based on a description on a message board. Billman works on cars all day long, then usually on the weekends, and then at night when he's at home. The poor guy works more than any 3 people I know, so getting mad because he doesn't have time to read your messages is kinda lame.

But anyways, if you don't have a SC'r the timing chain tensioner is a cake walk. DO NOT pull the pin until I tell ya, and read these instructions all the way through! Also find the other peoples instructions, as I'm doing this off memory to give you an idea of what the install is.

1. Its just above your oil filter and easy to get to. You'll need a 14mm socket and torque wrench.
2. You remove 2 bolts. (14mm)
3. Carefully remove old tensioner.
4. Install the new tensioner, leave the PIN IN! I don't know the torque settings, you'll have to search! Its aluminum threads, and it'll strip if you don't torque it right. Not a good area to screw up!
5. There is a hex access port in the front. You may/may not have to move your intake out of the way. You remove the access port, then use a pair of needle nose pillars to remove the pin (don't drop it!). You'll probably hear it click into place.
6. Put the hex bolt back in. Again find the torque settings, not something you want to strip or put on too loose.

That should do it. (make sure if you moved any intake stuff to put it back). This will probably take you less than 20 minutes. There are much better instruction floating around if you search for them. If you run across another set from me, those are for people with SC'rs who may not want to dismantle half of it to get it in so find the other peoples instuctions.
