Tire Valve Leaks
Problem: Custom, three-piece modular wheels came with metal tire valves that slowly leaked about 5-6 lbs./wk. Placement of valves was too close to inner barrel to allow tightening nuts to turn, and two wheels have oblong holes. The leakage is around the holes and not through the valves. After a dozen attempts to retrofit various tire valves and rubber washers, an experienced pro said, “it ain’t getting any better due to poor placement of the valve holes.” They still leak about 2-3 lbs./wk.
Question #1: Would more compliant rubber valves work better to seal the holes? While black rubber valves on custom wheels may look odd to some, I’d prefer them to constantly refilling the tires before each drive.
Question #2: What would be the problem(s) with sealing the metal (or rubber) valves with silicone or some more reliable sealant? The installation pro is very reluctant to use silicone; “won’t last and could suddenly blow.”
Finally, the return-period has expired or I would have sent them back. Any and all reasonable suggestions appreciated! Thanks!!
