Default Transmission

Hi, UTH
I have a 2005 S2K with 1750 miles that intermittently grinds when shifting into 2nd gear and I feel a tick when going through naturel. I brought it back to the dealer didn't happen. I also found a TSB 00-55 with my problem, but the dealer said that's for a 2000 TSB not for my car. What can I do...
Regards,
Kevin

I read somewhere about this being an issue for the first few thousand miles and then it wears in. That may not be the case for you, but if there is something wrong it should be covered under your waranty.

Make sure that your car is warmed up before doing any high rpm shift in any gear. Also the 1st to 2nd shift is the most tricky.

I recommend that you practice the technique before blaming the mechanics of the shifter.

Often times the hands move faster than the feet and the fact that the shifter has such a short throw only emphasizes this.

Slow down the shifts and make sure you are in synch with your feet when engaging and disengaging the clutch.

Practice...

Even if it warm, and I shift slow it happens.

I'm most cases it's normal. Let it break in a little more before worring about it. It's a common issue you may have to learn to live with.

I have the same problem with my shifter. My car is 2005 and when I shift on 2nd it kinda grinds a little bit. I noticed thought that if I warm it up enough, it tends to stop the problem. Buttom line for me, the engine needs to be warmed up.

I have a 2005 with just about 1200 miles on it. I have the same "problem" if it is in fact a problem.

I would say it is more of a "grunt" than a "grind." I think when people here read the word grind, they view it as a driver timing problem between the clutch and the shift. This is not the case! This is the typical 1-2 crunch that people have talked about since day 1 of the S2000.

For me the "grunt" has occurred:
- Always when cold, it goes away once the tranny is warmed up.
- When shifting at what I would consider a normal speed (not necessarily quick, but certainly not slow), AND sometimes when shifting slow when the tranny is at ambient temp.

I have also noticed that the "grunt" occurs more likely at lower RPMs, when trying to drive in a more relaxed manner (shifting between 3500-4500). Shifting around 5000-5500 I don't really notice any "grunt." By the time I'm shifting any higher than 6000, the engine and the tranny are plenty warmed up and the problem goes away.

Is it a problem? My current response is no.

This topic has been discussed here for years. My expectations are that as I get some miles on the car, the tranny will wear in and the grunt and notchiness will go away. Having driven several broken in AP1s (30k + miles) and a broken in AP2 (~4k miles) that were all butter smooth, I would expect my car to smooth out over the first few thousand miles. If not, I'll be headin' in for warrantee work.

I think yours is fine too. Just be patient with it and figure out what works to minimize the crunch until it wears in.

I would think that it needs some time to break in, say 2-3k? then you can try different gear oils and see whats works best.

Yeah- from late fall to early spring when its cold out, it takes a loooong time for the tranny to warm up.

During the summer, in a min or two, the transmission is beautifully smooth. However once temps drop, I found it can take over 10 minutes for the transmission to get warmed up and smooth.

Until then I shift very accurately and verrrry slowly to avoid a grind. 2004 with 36K miles here.
