Transmission CLUNK

Default Transmission CLUNK

Hi.

The issue:
Car stationery, put into first and pull forward there is a clunk from underneath the car in the gearbox area. Put the car into reverse and pull backwards the same clunk can be heard.

This only occurs the once when either going backwards or forwards.

I can replicate the sound when in motion especially if i drop down a gear or two bringing the revs up and putting the car under loads to accelerate quickly.

I have made a video where i am just rolling backwards and forwards in my street, the sound can be heard.

Thanks for the reply but I am not sure about that suggestion, the noise is a clear clunk not a grinding / scraping

Completely normal on an S2000 for it to clunk if you are at a stand still and go from N to 1st or Reverse. You probably can also feel the clunk through the body.
Put your clutch in and hold it down for 5-10 seconds prior to shifting in to 1st or revers. Let me know if it stops.


Wait, does it clunk when you start moving or at a stand still while shifting?

Yeah, at first I thought this is what he meant, then my basic reading comprehension skills allowed me to detect that noise occurs when he actually starts moving, not just when he puts it in gear.

Sorry, total lack of reading comprehension that seems to plague this forum is a pet peeve of mine.

The noise occurs when I start moving and the clunk can be heard and felt through the car.

It doesn't matter if the clutch is being slipper or fully up or down, the noise still happens. If I pull away aggressively IE snapping the clutch up the noise is much louder.

Its not the gear select clunk click that occurs - thats normal haha

Check motor, trans, diffy mounts. Hard to pinpoint.

Axles nut will be more of a click.

Engine and trans mounts are spoon, around 1 month old.

Will check diff mounts, had one crack around 2 months ago, maybe the rest have died

Anything new is where I always check first. Second, I think I see your problem, the steering wheel is on the wrong side.

Since you say it can be felt throughout the whole car it is probably NOT this but......brake pads can break away from the adhesive on the metal backing. They will still be stuck inside the caliper and the car will brake normally but the pads will have back and forth play. When you go forward the pads slam against the front of the caliper and clunk. The when you shift into reverse, they get thrown the other direction and clunk against the back part of the caliper. If your pads are old, it could be the culprit.
