So I finally am getting the motor on my 2000 ap1 rebuilt at a shop, and transmission is the next thing on my list since I know that the synchros for 2nd and 3rd are worn out. I also found out today that my clutch is almost completely worn out, since they pulled the transmission to do the rebuild. It would be nice to have it rebuilt right now since its out of the car anyways, but labor is about $560, and parts will be between $1000 and $3000 most likely. Would it be a better idea to just buy a used ap2 tranny, or should I just do the rebuild?

 

My 6th gear on my ap1 wouldn't go in so I bought an ap2 trans for $700. You should go for the Ap2 trans.

 

Personally, I would look for a low mileage AP2 trans. Shorter gears FTW.

 

Should I be worried about buying a used one, since it could have similar problems? The rebuild guy recommended that I don't buy a used one, but since I don't know him I don't know if he just wants my business or if he is being helpful.

 

Salvage yards price used transmissions based upon year model and miles on the wreck. The one I bought was cheaper than a rebuild and it turned out to be better than my old one ever was even when the car was new. There is some risk (as there is with a rebuild) but most offer a replacement part warranty.

 

I'd definitely go with a low mileage ap2 tranny.

 

ap2 trans ftw. I let a buddy drive my car and he was blown away with the ap2 trans. on the ap1trans I always had to count 1mississippi when shifting to second or grind. with the ap2 as long as the fluid is clean and up to temp the car shifts beautifully

 

No question, buy a used one.

 

My 2000 had the junk transmission like many others and could not be shifted quickly into second but my salvage yard transmission from an '02 shifts well, better than some ap2s. The early transmissions were pretty poor but all ap1 boxes are not.

 

My MY02 AP1 transmission is pretty notchy when cold, but after I drive the car for like 5 or 6 blocks all gears become buttery smooth with no grinding. This is after 4 owners and almost 140k miles.

If you get an AP1 transmission the 02's seem to be the best for some reason. If you go AP2 remember you'll need to change the flange for an AP1 or your driveshaft won't line up with the bolt holes.
