Hello my name is Terry and I am from www.spool-turbo.com I am also a mod over at mazdamp3.com in the F/I section
Let me say first of all hello to everybody...and no I am not trying to sell anything here

We currently offer turbo related products for the WRX and fabricate turbo kits for the protege5/mp3.

My question to you all is this?
Would any of you be interested in a turbo kit for your car? Something perhaps in the 5500-6500 dollar range? I am aware that there are some companies making kits out there. And I know several companies have come on here and asked the same questions that I am asking but ended up empty handed. I am not promising anything, basically just wanted to know what you guys would be looking for in a kit that is currently not available? Or perhaps upgrades, engine managment ect?

If we decided to do this we would offer the kits with tubular manifolds, and all the good stuff. Perhaps even offer a plug n play engine managment system upgrade(kinda like a stage2) with pretuned maps for easy tuning ect.

All of your comments, gripes and concerns would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Terry

From the feelings I've gotten around the board, a kit needs to be in the 4-5k range to be really competitive, because a Speedcraft turbo kit is already available for $6000 or so. So, unless it's significantly cheaper, people generally want to go for something that is tried tested and safe, rather than spending almost the same amount on an unproven kit which they may have to wait ages for etc etc etc.

Personally, I am getting a custom turbo done locally here... The price will be significantly below the price of a speedcraft kit (approximately half) but it's because we're taking shortcuts and making compromises to keep the cost down.

Ditto what Sunder said in the first paragraph. Also, if you're aware that several other companies have posted an interest in creating a kit, then you've already seen everyone's comments on what they would like to see in a new kit. Nothing else can be said than what has already been written.

As Comptech and Vortech have proven, there is room for competition in the FI market. I chose the Comptech kit because I wanted to do the work myself. BlackS2000Turbo (Larry) installed the Speed Craft turbo kit himself. One of the keys is to ensure that your kit is complete and can be installed by a well-versed mechanic with the right tools and information. If it is going to cost another $1000 on top of the kit to get it installed, that will be a big factor in how well you can compete.

Regarding engine management, that would be interesting. The AEM is the only standalone that I know of for our car. If you could get that tuned and ship it with the maps, you would really be onto something. As far as I can tell, there are only a few among us with the talent to tune that beast.

Make sure you stick with top quality components in your kit - nobody spending that kind of money wants parts that are not up to the task.

Finally, make sure you are ready to offer tons of technical support. Comptech has always been ready to talk on the phone and BlackS2000Turbo has had nothing but praise for the guys at Speed Craft. Having somebody to turn to is of vital importance.

Just my $.02.

Honestly, I'm putting together a turbo kit myself for around 4k which includes fuel management (VAFC, fuel pump, Fuel pressure regulator), gauges, and other basic turbo kit pieces. To be competitive, you need to refer to posts above this one.

Thanks guys for your input and not ripping me into shreads. I will have to reevaluate the situation and see what we can do with a 4000-4500 dollar kit.
Thanks again

4k for a turbo kit would be the max I would pay. I find companies out there constantly trying to make huge profits off kits whereas if you go get the parts individually they will add up to half the price of the kit.
If I can get these parts listed below at this price, I can just imagine what a business pays wholesale for them.
Manifold $500 or less
turbo $600
wastegate $300
blowoff $300
intercooler and piping $700
fuel pump ?
hardware $200
I'd say you could put a kit together for 3 grand, mark it up $500 and I'd buy it.
