Default Turbo owners I need help....

Disclaimer: There will be no discussion of superchargers in this thread at all, thank you.

I have decided to purchase a turbo kit for my S. I am not here to debate the pro's and con's of a turbo kit, or to argue about whose kit is better. I need help with the exhaust once installing a turbo. I understand that the pipping for a turbo needs to be 3" to reduce back-pressure to help the turbo spool efficiently. Once I install the turbo what should I do to solve the pipping problem of the exhaust past the cat?

After doing a search and talking to both Stage 6 and Speedcraft both have recommended their dual Apexi exhaust system with 3" pipping. People who have a turbo, what kind of exhaust systems are you using? Are there any benefits, besides saving weight, from using a single outlet exhaust with a turbo?

Also, how large are the tips on the Apexi exhausts? Does it increase the noise to the point of being undriveable day-to-day? Like the Veilside exhaust, which I have read is just too loud for some people. Are there other options as far as an exhaust with 3" pipping? I would love to go with a single outlet HKS exhaust,

HKS exhaust I am considering

The exhaust setup for the RX-7 appears to have 3" pipping, single outlet, and almost a 5 inch tip (which worries me). The price is very comparable to Apexi. At this point I am not sure if this exhaust will even work or install properly. If anyone has input as to why I shouldn't use the HKS exhaust it would be greatly appreciated. I apologize for the lengthy post, but I am trying to become as educated as possible before investing in a turbo.

All you have to do is go to your local muffler shop and have them build you a 3" piping and weld on whatever exhaust you are considering. The tip really doen't matter that is mostly for looks.

Just went for a ride yesterday in my buddy's(PA S2000) speedcraft turboed S2000. He is running the Apexi exhaust system w/ 3" downpiping that you speek of. The exhaust is very very loud w/ a deafening drone around 5rpms. I was not able to keep a conversation with him above 4500rpms the exhaust is that loud, however i think the speedcraft kit is put together very well & his car makes some wonderful noises. He was only running 6psi yesterday on pump gas, he said on race fuel w/ boost turned up to 8psi the exhaust is even louder then what i encountered yesterday , good luck w/ turbo

Ignore my userid, I kept it from another board when I use to have a couple of turbo'd cars. But from playing with them before all you really are looking for is a free flowing exhaust system from downpipe back. There is no need to go all out Ti unless you are trying to save the weight. There is no need to pay extra for a brand name universal such as an HKS. It's all about the piping, and as I said before that can be done cheaply at your local muffler shop. Hell DSM guys looking to save a buck will throw Magnaflows with 3" piping on their cars and it runs fine.

Here's what I did... 3" custom single output with VERY few mandrel bends.

P.S. - Sounds great, works better!

BlackS2000turbo-Great pics!!! Did you paint the exhaust?

I seem to remember a thread that documented the installation of a Speedcraft kit, if I recall that was you right? Do you use a VAFC? What kind of cannister are you using? Am I correct to assume that you would recommend the single exhaust route over dual?

I really appreciate everyone's responses. Keep them coming, the more responses from the turbo crowd the better idea I will have as far as the best way to go.

Yes, blacks2000turbo's exhaust is indeed nice. I like I like

...here is some pics of my setup. For those who havent seen it.

Now I have been told that regardless of whether or not you decide to go with one or two apex mufflers, that the noise level is very loud. I like the sound of my apex however its sometimes annoying,...and I wish that there was someway that I could reduce the noise level without sacrificing power (using a silencer, or cat, etc.)

I've got Speedcraft's setup in stainless steel with twin N1s. To be honest, although I like the setup and have no plans to buy new mufflers, I do have mixed feelings about the N1s. They're not subtle.

The good news is that at WOT, it sounds like an all-out race car. The bad news is that at WOT, it sounds like an all-out race car.

Check out the thread on the PA-MD border drive and you'll read lots of comments from people who could hear me from more than a half mile back and thus knew well in advance when to hammer it and when to go off throttle.

Bottom line is that it's loud whenever you're on the throttle and it's always loud in V-TEC. Much of the time, I like it. Sometimes, it's just obnoxious. At narrow throttle and on the highway, I don't think it's all that much louder then stock -- wind noise and road noise tends to overwhelm the exhaust, much like they did before the turbo was installed.

Good luck with your decision.

As for the question of single versus twin, I don't think it makes any difference in power, given that the flow splits pretty far downstream.
