Default Tyre question

I'm up for my 4th set of tyres in 20,000 miles. I've come to the conclusion that my rate of wear is due to a lot of high speed (european freeway) driving and little to do with alignment or style. I'm sure that if I curb this kind of driving the tyres will last a lot longer.

I can now get Bridgestone re540S and yokohama A038. These are competition tyres. What I would like to discuss is whether there are disadvantages in using this type of tyres on te street, beyond reduced life expectancy (for the tyres, hopefully). Are these tyres prone to fade with a lot of heating cycles? any other disadvantages anyone know / can think of?

Thanks

The Bridgestones are very noisy and wear fast on the street.

70MPH? Is that fast?

Out of my 20,000 miles a good percentage was between 100 and 130MPH (nope, never got a ticket ).

Note that wear is proportional to the square of velocity. So wear at 115mph is 2.7 higher than at 70MPH.

In other words, if a tyre lasts 20,000 miles at 70MPH, it will last 7,400 at 110MPH.

Naishu,

I don't mind the wear, and my car is already somewhat noisier than stock withe the mugen exhaust. It will get noisier with the mugen intake. How bad are the R540?

... and this is a picture of the tyres I'm talking about:

BTW, they were recommended by the Mugen engineer we talked to when in Japan.

The large blocks on those tires will be very noisy on some surfaces. The Yoko A032R tires I drive to the track have a similar tread that set up a loud hum especially at 30

Mingster,

You're rigth. In Europe roads are different ( worst, most of them)as well as the divers and the police.
We live in the same contry, and as Luis can confirm, we can cover a distance similar as the distance from Miami to Lake Buena Vista in about one hour.
Cool, don't you think.

Well, I don't have mine yet, but I'll have them in a week or so. I can report then. I have heard from others that they are extremely noisy at certain speeds, pretty much on any surface. It probably depends on the tyre size, but one guy said his were far too noisy to cruise at 110km/h - he had to go much faster or slower. This doesn't seem to be a problem for you

By the way, I don't think the 540s are appropriate for the road. You will need to get them pretty heated up before they are effective and they're probably a bit suspect in the wet. I'm getting mine exclusively for the track (for my WRX actually).

Wich ones do you intend to use?
