Default valve adjustment questions

ok, so when doing a valve adjustment, are u actually measuring a gap that should be between the set screw and the valve stem or just the amount of allowable movement that rocker arm will lift before stopping. Because when i insert the feeler gauges the rocker arm actually lifts a little bit and am i'm unsure if this effects the accuracy of the adjustment. should i push down on the screw driver to keep the rocker arm down while i perform the adjustment or is it ok to let the rocker arm raise up a bit when i put the feeler gauges in? because obviously there will be more drag on the feelers if i pushed down on the screw driver.

taken from a write up on s2000.com

Once you loosen the locknut, you are ready to insert the geeler gauge. On the S2000, you will need to insert it just under the adjuster screw, between it and the valve stem (hidden inside the retainer on top of the valve spring). It's hard to miss, simply aim under the adjuster and you should find it. For the Prelude, you need to insert the feeler between the rocker pad and cam lobe. You should see 3 rocker pads, the outer two being over the valve springs- those are the two you want. See if it fits with some resistance, if it won't fit or is too loose (no resistance), you will need to adjust that valve.

good luck!

well...when you loosen the screw, you will have movement.

so you insert the feeler gauge and tighten the screw...now there won't be movement.

the feeler gauge is what sets the gap...if you set it at .008, then a .08 gauge will be able to be inserted with the screw tightened...but you should not be able to insert a .09

there you go.

So who has tried this? Is this the Billman250 secret?

^ Not sure, but that was posted in '02. I'd like to hear from those brave folks that went to .006" on intakes and .008" on exhuasts after all these years. I'll stick with .008/.010", thank you.
