Default Valve Job

Just had our year 2000 S2000 in to the dealer because it was throwing misfire codes on all cylinders. They told me that #2 cylinder was down to 80 psi compression and that I needed a new engine! Offered to sell me a used one they had with 90 miles in it fro $5000 and around $2000 installation and they keep my engine. They put down the idea of a valve job or new head. The car is in nice shape with a new Robins top and good tires but has 170,000 miles on it. It doesn't give any indication of the misfire except the check engine light came back on. Has anyone had any experience with having the head overhauled and if so how much was it and was it something you would recommend? Jack

$7,000 is alot, you should just look online for a used engine. I've seen Engine/Trans sell for as low as $3,200

Not really a reply, Just noticed that I said the used engine had 90 miles on it and at that price I might have jumped on it but it had 90,000 miles on it!

Do your own compression test first. It could have been fine and dealer just trying to rip you off. It could be valves, coil packs or other things. Also could be the engine, but I would make sure that it truly is before investing in a new one

2500 for a good long block used is about the norm on forums.

That some serious mistrust in dealerships to think that they would be trying to rip him off for a whole new engine. AT WORST, I would ask to see the compression test.

But on to the diagnosing. I would ask them where the compression is going. If it is a valve issue, you can get the head reworked.

Dealerships have a reputation for being less than honest on more than a single occasion. Where are you located? Id ask around for a trusted shop
