Default Valve Retainer Question!

Hey Gang! Looking for some guidance. 01/AP1 here, looking to swap out intake retainers. Are the keepers universal, or engine specific? Thanks in advance for the input!

If swapping to AP2 retainers you need AP2 keepers. The keeper design is different.

Thanks for the input guys. To be clear, this mod is best suited for intake side correct?

You'd be surprised. I've seen a few cracked exhaust retainers.

A lot of people only do the intake retainers and keepers... idk why. If I am tearing the head half apart, I am doing all 16 retainers, 32 keepers, 8 intake valve stem seals, and 8 exhaust valve stem seals. It is marginally more work to do everything and is really cheap insurance. There have been cases of exhaust retainer failures and the valve seals are also a known failure point.

You will need the following for the full overhaul:
16x 14765-PRB-A01 (AP2 Retainer)
32x 14781-PCX-004 (AP2 Cotter/Keeper)
8x 12210-PZ1-004 (Intake valve stem seal)
8x 12211-PZ1-004 (Exhaust valve stem seal)

A set of feeler gauges and the special valve tool is needed to do a valve adjustment to finish the job and some kind of valve compressor tool is recommended, there are tons of info on the options for those. I got an ebay special k-series one and modified it to fit the F20.

The reason to do only the intake side has been discussed in great detail here, many years ago. Please refer to the topics it the UTH forum regarding it.
