Default valve spring compressor required?

Is a valve spring compressor required to remove the valve springs and valves when the head is off the car?

Not necessarily. Put a rag over the valve retainer, hit it with a rubber mallet. The keepers will pop out and you can remove the valve.

You'll need a compressor to put it back together.
