Default VSA and grating noise

Hi All, got a 2008 s2k with pretty low mileage ~15k and wanted to ask you all if this noise invoked during hard corners is normal, my other s2k was a 2001-er and such had no traction control... the noise is only apparent when VSA is activated and only when turning hard left... there's no noise on hard right turns which invoke VSA and turning the VSA off there's no noise at all.... I've been for a run out with a Honda garage technician and they couldn't identify it, had it on a ramp, nothing was hanging off or out of place so they said ignore it... it's hard to explain the noise, it's like it is coming from behind the right hand side of the dash and it's like a half second 'grate' - as I said only when turning left and only under VSA..

Thanks in advance.
Paul

I know your noise exactly.

If it helps, I just drove a CR at the dragon who asked me to look at this.

With the VSA on (light off) the car makes a sound like its got a wheel rubbing when you make a quick sharp turn.

Once you disable the system (triangle light on) the noise disappears 100%.

I THINK its a rapid pulse sequence of the abs modulator unit. His car was a mint low mile CR so of course nothing was found or would I expect it to be wrong.

Maybe some others can give this a try to get a pattern here.

I believe this is just part of the software/hardware. Does it only do it when you rapidly turn the wheel, as opposed to a gradual turn?

I have this exact same problem on my 09.

At first, I had incorrectly assumed it was due to the used CR steering rack that I just swapped in, because I had just started noticing the sound at around that same time. See thread here:

https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/101...#entry22402553

Also, the reason why it seems that it only happens on left turns (which is incorrect, I can replicate it on right hand turns, but it is indeed harder) is because left turns are usually wider and more gradual, as opposed to when you are in the right hand lane and making a right turn (which is tighter). So the reason why this happens is because it happens on steady state understeer, which causes the VSA to kick in on the front brakes. I had doubts myself whether this sound was really due to VSA, because it seems that when it happens the VSA light doesn't blink on the dash, but your post just told me otherwise. I have had my car inspected by multiple shops as well, and they couldn't figure out the issue. Hope this helps!

2008-2009VSA action than the sensitive front wheel rear wheel grip too much difference. The VSA easy actuation.

Correct, I live in mountain country and taking the tight bends gradually is OK, sudden turn-ins results in this noise, when the VSA is deactivated by pressing the dash button therefore showing the ondash warning(or whatever the correct term is) there is no noise. it's quite an aggresive grate noise and very off putting ! Was assured by a Honda technician who drove it and also experianced the sensation that there was nothing serious wrong with the car. Just wanted to share here to see if others also had found this.

I'm leaning towards that this is totally normal.

Hi Sleepybox, yep, having read your earlier post seems we're talking the same noise..
