Default vtec...

i'm tryin to figure out how vtec works,
i know that when it passes a set rpm it opens an extra valve for more intake but i was wondering how does it engage? How does it open extra valves seperately? pics would be appreciated

Extra valves don't open, the valves open more and for longer duration of time. On VTEC cam, there are 2 sets of lobes, one of normal height and another that is taller. When engine hits VTEC RPM, ecu sends signal to VTEC solonoid to send oil down a rail that makes the valves open w/ the taller lobes as apposed to the the shorter ones. The theory behind this is at certain RPM's the engine benafits from taking in more air / fuel. i-VTEC = VTEC on demand, the motor engages VTEC at will as apposed to certain RMP.
