Default VTEC on the '02 Acura MDX

My dad just got a new MDX and I just looked under the hood today. It was a 3.5 VTEC but I was wondering how VTEC would engage since this is an automatic car? Do you just floor the throttle and wait till the rpms get really high? Anyone know the vtec crossover point? Thanks...

Keep in mind that there's fuel economy vtec (Which the MDX has) and big badass twincam vtec (Which my car and the S2000 have)

Fuel economy vtec kicks in lower and is harder to notice.

You are correct about how VTEC operates. It is no different on an automatic car, as VTEC is a function of the engine, not the transmission. I believe the ECU takes in to account throttle position, and load (in addition to many other things) before it engages VTEC, so if for some reason you're at high rpm with light throttle it won't engage...

it engages at about 3500 on my odyssey. (00') In our ody, vtec opens the 2nd intake valve. In normal low speed operation, the engine runs on only 1 intake valve. I have to believe the MDX has a more performance oriented version since it has 240 hp.(instead of my 00's 210)

Just a note, the MDX does not have fuel economy VTEC (that would be VTEC-E, found in the Civic HX) The 3.5l V6 uses VTEC to help maximize torque. It is not intended to be a high revving machine like the S2000, ITR, RSX, NSX, etc... It uses VTEC to have a broad, flat torque curve.

Yeah, our Pilot has the same engine. I can feel a little bit of VTEC but nothing like the S2000 (respectively).

I hate to sound like I'm just being contrary but it does. The intake valves don't open the same amount at low rpms. One only opens far enough to prevent fuel puddling on the backside of the valve, the other opens all the way. This ensures a good swirling flow of air and fuel, mixing them more thoroughly to promote better mileage... It's still not quite the same as Insight vtec (Which I presume is similar to HX but I can't say for sure because we don't get HX here) which runs leaner, has a better oxygen sensor, different catalytic converters, etc...

Twincam vtec opens both intake valves about the same amount on the small cam and knocks 'em open farther for longer on the big cam.
