Default vtec issue noise in the head

I have had vtec issues for a year. I have tried and played with everything as I was throwing a p1259 and not being allowed to go into vtec. I recently swapped to an aem and have been doing some 3000 rpm vtec testing. The aem is switching it on but it is making a mechanical noise toward the rear of the head. I took the valve cover off and took a look and cannot see anything wrong. I don't want to play the what did it sound like game I am just looking for anyone who may have had a similar issue and what it is/was and how they resolved it. TIA

BTW there are no noises at all when not in vtec. she runs like a charm on the low cam all the way to7000+ rpms.

Sounds like in order to come up with definite conclusion the head has to be disassembled... : /

yes. Toward the the firewall. I hope that I don't have to yank the head off again. I can't see anything on the rockers or valve arrambly that is wrong. I had the cams off to check the vtec pins a couple of weeks ago.. hmm...
