It's virtually impossible for the VTEC to not function and you not to have a CEL.

So, it senses whether the solenoid kicks in and sends oil pressure to the to the lost motion dohicky's? I didn't know that.

I've noticed that vtec engagement's pretty subtle on my '2k. It's not the "force me in my seat" engagement of my civic.

your civic forced you into your seat?

Anyway, I have a question regarding variable timing for the valves. I understand that you can optimized normal valve timing for low end or high end rpm's. Variable timing allows for both. My question is regarding where is it optimal. I don't know why it should be a fixed #.

compared to the prelude and early model vtec cars the engagement on the s2k is quite abit smoother.. also from the dynos ive seen it doesnt have the huge dip before the engagement point

In the future do not use Fram oil filters.. not that this would cause the problem. Just use Honda PCX-004 Filters from the dealer

Werd. Fram filters are horrible. I have heard nothing but problems from them.

A shot in the dark but you can try resetting the ECU.

Well if you have switched to Synthetic, then that seriously smooths out the vtec engagement so maybe this is what gives the impression, being that have not noted a CEL

There is a screen in the VTEC valve that might be clogged.
