Default VTEC should kick in earlier

OK - everyone knows how much of a kick VTEC gives at 6000 rpm. Why doesn't it kick in sooner? Surely if it transitioned at 4500 rpm we would get more benefit, and the bhp/rpm curve would look a little smoother?

Are there any aftermarket add-ons which let you control the transition to VTEC?

I agree in a way.
What you are after is VPAC( VTEC performance actuation controller) from Jackson Racing.

It lets you controll the Vtec point from 2.5K to 6K rpm. The unit will actually amplify the signal pertaining to engaging Vtec and will help you properly change the Vtec point.
However you must know the limitation to this. For normally aspirated you shouldn't engage below 4K rpm otherwise your car will run poorly. You can probably set somewhere between 5K and 5.5K and eliminate the usual dip before the Vtec engages.

I think it will benefit more if you are super or turbo charged.

Installation is pretty straightforward and has diagram for S2000.

I had one on the car but took it off before the dyno run. My mechanic goofed and forgot to wire very critical wire, Vtec solenoid wire resulting in not going into Vtec.
However at my leisure, I will put it on and fool with it later.

However, come to think of it why mess around with good and proven setting?
Instead of smooth transition, you may actually prefer the acceleration leap when in Vtec.

The new Civic EX VTEC doesn't kick in until 4500RPM so Honda definately wouldn't put it that low on our beloved S2000. For a VTEC Controller, Jackson Racing will solve that.

If I remember right, the controller by Jackson Racing was nearly $300...for that price, it seems more reasonable to get a full-blown VFAC from Apexi and control a lot more than your VTEC point.

i believe this was covered in a different thread. if you change it you will loose hp. i guess it is at the right spot. a v-afc will be able to change vtec points too.

I think this has been beat to death, the truth is, Honda really optimized this car to the gills, any company with any product is hard-pressed to make any HP gains. The VTEC point was made specifically for this engine, it was never any different, unlike the max RPM. The car originally had a 10K RPM redline but it lost power very quickly after 9K so it was lowered, to my knowledge the VTEC crossover has never been any different.

Make it breathe a little easier, make it lighter, these are the keys to making the ultimate S2K.
