Default vtec sputtering, HELP!

Lately, my 00 s2k has been sputtering in vtec and I cannot figure it out. I know that vtec is regulated by oil pressure, so i went ahead and changed the oil to see if would fix the problem but that seemed to not work. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for me. I can't stand driving my car without going into vtec. The sound just sooths my soul

First of all, are you trying to VTEC with less than 3 bars on the temp gauge? If so, that's normal.

Otherwise, do a search on MAP SENSOR WHACK and give that a try.

shaggy and I had that problem in the car that we autocross -- the car would drive fine below the VTEC transition, but would cough and sputter above it. We eventually figured out that the problem was a loose spark plug wire which was vibrating out of contact, but only while in VTEC.

Good luck...

Steve

I don't believe honda vtec is engaged by oil pressure. I believe when the ECU sees a certain RPM it enguages VTEC via the vtec selenoid. toyota's vvti-l system is based on oil pressure.

i use 92 octane always. i was thinking that it might be something with the coils or spark plugs. also what is a "map sensor whack"...I never go into vtec until the motor is fully warmed up. thanks for the input guys

Not directly, but it makes sure that the oil pressure is above a certain level before engaging VTEC.

It doesn't use oil pressure to allow VTEC, the ECU does that. However, once engaged, it's oil pressure that actually pushes the pins in the rockers to engage VTEC.
