Default Vtec/valve adjustment

ok, well first my car is no longer shutting off, thank goodness. I set my exhaust valves to .10mm. I checked the intake valves and they seemed to be ok. The stupid machanic must have mixed the valves up. put the specs for the intake on the exhaust side, and visa versa. I'm going to check the intake valve again to make sure they all are correct.

here is my problem. Is vtec suppose to kick in at 5500 or 6000 rpm. Mine makes a loud pop when kicking in, but it kicks in at 6000rpm. I used to kick in at 6500 before adjusting the exhaust valves. So my thinking could only believe the intake valves may need a need a little fine tuning so the vtec comes in at 5500 instead of 6000.

tell me what you think?

Thx

It always kicked in at 6k.. The computer engages vtec electronically. Valve clearances dont have anything to do with vtec. I hope you meant .010 for your clearance. If you set it at .1 your S would sound pretty diesel. As for the loud pop... The mechanic that set your valves might have damaged your rocker arm assembly when he set the wrong clearances. I've had my car sounding diesel after I took it to get the valves adjusted but i've never heard a pop when vtec engages..

VTEC always engages at 6k, unless you have a vtec controller, no amount of machanical adjusting is going to change that. The only thing i could think of would be that you had low oil pressure until about 6.5k which = not a good thing.

nope..it has enough oil, when i did the valves, the damn machanic had the exhaust valves at .008 and the intake at .009.

yeah sorry i meant .010. i need to check the intake valves again..this coming weekend. still kinda stumbles when coming to a stop. dont know what else it could be...did the ignition coils, and IAC, and map whack. cant figure out why it keeps stumbling and shutting off sometimes.

any ideas?

did you connect the igition coil all the way in? it's also possible the spark plug is bad(spark plug gap and model of spark plug)

i just did a valve adjustment on s2ki member and he's car just shut down too. while i was doing a valve adjustment, i installed some denso iridum ik20 and i think that's causing the shut off. I told him to get some oem double platinum spark plugs.

yeah.i even just got new ignition coils just to make sure mine werent bad. i know one was bad for sure, but decided to just replace all of them. Right now i'm running the NGK 6's..not the 7's..but even when i had the 7's in it, it still ran like this. I have some 7's on order now, but it takes like 2 wks to get here.

It also looks like the cams are a half tooth off..i'm sure that might make a difference, but when i'm driving it, it runs good, just a little sluggish, until it hits vtec. I'm going to check the intake valves again this weekend, and make sure they are set perfect again.

what's ngk 7's?

if your cams are half tooth off, you shouldn't operate your vehicle.
