Default Want A Turbo!

ok, i tried doing some research and finding old threads, but i really can't pinpoint a place to get a turbo, even a custom made turbo. I know speedcraft made one... but where else?

Who here has a turbo?

How is it so far? do you like it?

The reason i want one is I have friends who have...

S4
Jetta 1.8t
Evo IV

the last one impressed me the most yesterday. He is boosting 16psi, getting a kit to bring that to 24.

That sucker is one fast mother....

anyway, much thanks to those who help...

Besides Speedcraft you have the option of calling your local performance shop and seeing if they want to weld one up.

how safe is it to get someone to put together a turbo? instead of waiting for a kit?

Safety depends on who does the work and who drives the car. I would go with something that has thusfar been proven such as Speedcraft. They have kits in stock so there is no wait. Good luck. Matt.

I guess if you have to ask that question you probably are going to want to buy someone else's kit. After having purchased someone else's kit I am confident beyond a shadow of a doubt that I could build a better kit if I did it myself. However I wouldn't have reached this point had I not have purchased someone else's...

Kind of a catch 22.

If you make you're own, you're going to end up spending alot of money anyways. The Speedcraft kit comes with very high quality parts, but I have some concerns about efficiency. The bottom line is that it's the best out there that's available (on a LHD car) The Hypertune setup is the ultimate setup, but I wouldn't recommend going with them for many reasons. They have only made one kit so far (that I know of) and they set it up with a Motec system. This is not inexpensive, and it's not a bolton. It requires alot of labor (tuning) and engine work to have it run correctly. That being said, I would rather have the Hypertune kit...

$6200, no, they can ship, and a good tuning shop would be a good idea

I would be weary about having a local shop bolt one up for you. For a turbo to function correctly, it must be a complimentary size and trim when compared to the engine. Since there is relatively few kits out there, it would be hard for the average speed shop to guage what trim you should have for your F20C.

Since I do alot of driving and don't have a whole lot of $$$...I would appreciate if someone came out with a "stage I" turbo kit that is cost effective and geared more towards everyday drivability:

- The turbo kit pushes just enough boost so you don't have to mess with timing.
- Intercooler/bov optional.

I think that if you get in to it then you'll start realizing where all of the costs go. The Speedcraft kit costs as much as it does because it has really good parts in it, not just for speed, but also for reliability.

I wouldn't advise running a turbo even at 6 psi without an intercooler. Turbos get EXTREMELY hot, and the air charge has to pass right by there to get pressurized, not to mention the fact that the process of compressing air heats it up.

That being said, I think that it's possible to have a decent turbo kit that would sell for $4500 or so...
