I'm not really looking for a diagnosis, I will get that when I take the car in to the shop on Monday. I just thought it would be fun to vote on what you think I destroyed this time around.

Symptoms: I was rolling at 30MPH when I dropped it into 1st gear and jammed on it. After running through 1st and 2nd I noticed a ticking sound coming from the right rear of the car. I thought at first that my exhaust had a leak in it, as I've been trying to get the fitting of the exhaust right for the past few weeks. The noise was only when I was on the gas...it would dissapear when I let off the gas (but still had the clutch engaged). I thought maybe it was the clutch, but I was definiely hearing it from the rear. After driving for a while, the noise suddenly got louder. We pulled over to check it out. It was during this exit of the road that I noticed the noise when the gas was not pushed, and as I rolled to a stop the sound was cyclical, and it slowed down as the wheel did. We looked under the car but found nothing. We inspected the breaks, but saw nothing unusual. We drove the car in circles and you could hear some metal on metal sound coming from the rear right wheel. It didn't seem to be from the differential, it seemed to be right around the wheel area. When we decided to pull back on the street the noise was suddenly MUCH louder as I rounded the circle to exit the parking lot...it was a very bad sound. At this time I thought it was the differential. When we got going on the street...at 30 mph the noise dissapeared. After a while I could hear it off and on...but it never was as bad as it was the very first time I heard it. We couldn't logically make any sense of what was going on. I made a few turns between there and home, and it never got louder in the turns...which surprised me. So, something is definitely messed up. No surprise. Whatever it is...it needs to be upgrade.

Info: I've got the Kaaz differential, and the Comptech bearing caps. Stock axles. Upgraded rotors...stock pads. Stock transmission.

Can you guess what it is??

Wheel bearing/hub. Would've said loose wheel, but you would have noticed that.

you're so used to saying you broke stuff, that you didn't know what you were talking about (brakes).

Sounds like it might have started a while ago with some hard accelerating and slowly worked its way into a bigger problem...

Now that UL has chimed in, I no longer feel confident in saying it was the brakes However, the symptoms (really loud at very low speeds, disappears at higher speeds, near the wheels, etc.) would make me think SOMETHING about the wheels, nothing about the diff or axles. My first guess would have been something making the brake pads/rotors rub, but wouldn't be able to reconcile how this could happen with a rolling start.

I guess this is why I'm only a shadetree mechanic. Electrical stuff pays the bills

I had something similar to this hapen to me on my front right wheel. IT was a metal scraping on metal sound and speeds up as the car goes faster. I coulda swear it was coming from the front brake so I took off the wheel. I wasnt able to locate the problem w/ the wheel off either so i just put the wheel back on, but when I did that the sound went away.

The official diagnosis is......

NOTHING!!

They told me they could not reproduce the sound and that I should bring it back if it happens again...while it's happening. <picturing my wheel falling off sometime this week as I drive to work>

Check your caliper...sounds like hecash's car on a long drive home (I drove it home).

If not that, check to see if your wheel is torqued down properly, or if your lugs aren't bent in a single direction.

I have less confidence in my prognosis since UL's already suggested something...but just in case.

My brothers civic got a tiny rock between some brake components and the sound was very similar to what you explained and it was completely invisible w/out really taking stuff apart. Just a thouhgt
