You could run the engine without the serp belt for a few seconds to see if the noise goes away. This would eliminate the alternator, water pump, or the two idlers. Remember don't run it for more than 10-30 seconds, as the water pump won't be turning.

spikez,

1. Go to Wal-Mart and purchase a roll of black electrical tape, ear plugs, and a pack of those LiquidIce breath mints.
2. Go to Sonic and purchase a Route 44 water. Drink as much of it as you can.
3. Purchase a pack of 'regular' Mentos at Walgreens. Eat them all.
4. Go out to your car, cut a small piece of electrical tape about 1x1in, and place it over the CEL.
5. Place ear plugs in ear.
6. Eat 3 LiquidIce mints at once.
7. Inhale deeply.

Not to flame you or anything, but it amazes me the amount of "What does this mean? Oh ya, the engine check light is on" type posts we've been getting these days. Anyway...

Get the CEL (check engine light) checked (AutoZone will do it for you for free) and post the code back up here. Don't drive the car hard while you're having this noise and check engine light. A loose valve makes a ticking/tapping sound, a really loose one doesn't make any noise cause it's just sitting there . Check that code and we'll probably be able to help you more. The griding sound could be attributed to the cam chain, but I've never seen it throw a CEL.
My car made a small 'pfft' this morning when I started it up. I think I may have spun the #4 rod bearing.
