Default WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER 85K MILES

So I need to replace my Catalytic Converter after 85 K miles (mechanic quoted me $1,000). Funds are very tight right now and I want to keep my car, but I am not sure if I can afford it if I am going to keep running into these kinds of issues ( I just replaced my clutch last month which cost me $1,700). At 85k miles, I believe these replacements to be normal, but I am not sure what I can expect in the future.

If anyone out there has over 85k miles and can tell me what kind of repairs I can expect to run into in the future it would be greatly appreciated so I can make an informed decision on if I must sell my most prized possession.

Thanks,

You're having your car repaired at the wrong place. You paid double what you should have for the clutch, and the cat should not cost 1000. You can pick up a used one off the forums or craigslist and it'll do the job fine.

You're only 5k over on the cat! I had mine replaced under warranty at 78k Since then, only an ignition coil has been a problem. At 160+ now.

You can find a used one for 75-125 bucks on this website. Take your car far away from that mechanic

yes your mechanic is robbing you blind. if there is absolutely no one else capable of doing a job on your car then go to him. he basically charged your 1000 for labor. go buy a used cat or buy a new BERK HFC. if you arent an 06 ap2 then you might get lucky and not throw a code. buy a six pack and pizza have a buddy help you.

Wow. Got ripped so hard man. I'm sorry for you. Clutch job should have been around 1,000 for everything plus labor.

Believe me I am aware of these crazy prices. I live in a suburb of Washington D.C. and I call a lot of places and price shop before doing any work. Believe it or not this guy is consistently cheaper than other places in my area. (one guy wanted to charge me $2700 for the clutch, I was so angry)

Either way, lets forget about these crazy prices. What kind of work are you guys finding needs to be done after 85K miles, that is the more important question.

Also, how many labor hours should the cat converter take to replace, or rather how many hours should I accept from a mechanic?

The cat takes literally 30 minutes to replace with the most basic of tools.

I replaced clutch, Timing chain tensioner, spark plugs (preventative), and that's it (i also did some other non necessary preventative maint such as CV bucket swaps etc..)

I am at 160k and car needs nothing. Other than tires, filters, and fluids the car is rock solid reliable. Best car to own in the decade I have been driving. Also the longest time I have owned a car 4.5 yrs.

If you buy a basic tool set this is probably the easiest car to work on because of how easily accessible everything is.
