I've replaced about 6-7 timing chain tensioners on s2ks, all with a clattering/ratcheting type of noise.

The noise has been 100% eliminated.

I can't get a good idea of your noise based on your clips.

It's getting rediculous, Bobbyb and hobokens2k are both getting new t-chain tensioners in the next two weeks.

 

This "bounce back" hissing can be caused by numerous NORMAL things. It can be partly intake noise. It can be partly tire noise.

It can be partly brake noise - even with the pads at "rest", you will still have slight contact between the pad and disc. Next time you have the front end jacked up, spin your wheel. You'll hear what I'm talking about. If you are cruising down the road beside a wall, this pad noise can sound like hissing.

Also, your car is riding on 4 "fans" that are moving air at quite a good rate. They are called your rims. At speed, even though they are not directionally finned like on the late 80's, early 90's style Vette rims, they still pull air through them. You are hearing this noise, too.

I think you need to loosen the cinches on your straight-jacket a notch or two.

my car has the same noises, too... and reading all the responses from everyone is making me feel a lot better about it. If you want to meet up sometime to hear each others' cars, I am still in the MD area.

Billman: how much does it cost to replace the t-chain tensioner? I am no longer under warranty, and do not think I can get the TSB done for free.

I'm curious. Are these primarily MY00 cars? Or does this issue run across the entire MY range?

 

All cars bro....as a matter of fact, my 03 was one of them, and the next two on the list are 03's as well. I have a really good sound clip of the t-chain tensioner noise, I will try to get it up here on this thread soon.

 

Definately, ive been looking for someone to check these things out with, my last exam is wednesay, after that all my time is gonna be devoted to the car, so whenever you get some time off let me know, pm me and we can continue this.

I dont think there is a TSB yet for the timing chain tensioner, but if the process doesnt involve anything that could throw off the timing, which i dont think it would (but could), then we can actually get together and do this for the cost of the parts, i dont know how well the previous owner took care of this car, so im gonna inspect/replace just about anything that isnt as it should be.

I can do it for 150 installed....it's not to hard, even guys who are into just changing wheels and brake pads can DIY.

Part retails for 120-160..
