Default What is this part and what's wrong with it?

I have attatched a picture of the part that is the source of the noise/vibration. This part makes a noise when the key is turned all the way and when the car is on. If it has been sitting for a little bit, it won't make it...so I guess just when the car is a bit warm. It is a churning/buzzing noise. It also makes a bit of a vibration. It is going in to the shop on Monday, but I was just wondering if this is something I could fix myself. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks!!

It's the aftercooler pump for a Vortech SC. They all make some noise when the key is turned on. Sometimes my old pump would be loud, then get quiet. After a few months if stayed quiet most of the time.

There is nothing wrong with it making noise.

I am aware of what it used to sound like, but now it is ALOT louder than usual and it really sounds like something is wrong with it (very sparatic). But before it was just a mellow hum.

I should alos note that when I oulled the CEL code, it read out "Low voltage to the ignition coil."

I'd doublecheck the aftercooler has coolant in it. If the noise gets to loud, you can replace the pump.

Just checked and there's nothing in there! What kind of coolant goes in there?
Thanks for the help so far!

The same coolant the engine uses is used in the aftercooler, sounds like you have a leak.

The coolant in the aftercooler is separate from the coolant used by the engine right? So just add regular antifreeze to the aftercooler resevoir? How much should I put in?

They are seperate systems. It's full when the coolant is about 1" below the filler cap. You will have to let the pump run buy turning on the key to bleed the air from the system while filling it.

All filled up and the noise has ceased. Thanks alot for the help! I will observe the coolant level over the next few days and see if it goes down at all. Thanks again and let me know if there's anything that I can do for you.

if that pump is what i think it is, then its a magnetic drive pump with a ceramic impeller.

Those pumps hate to be run when they are dry/nonprimed , and they need to be installed vertically with the hoses on the bottom for proper operation.
