Default What is wrong with my car?

I have a MY04 with 11,000 miles in her. I changed the tranny fluid at 10,000. Yesterday was the first time this happened and I chalked it up to a bad shift, but this morning it happened again.

Here is what happens: take off normal, punch the gas up till about 7000-7500 in 1st and then shift. It does go into 2nd but it grinds something fierce.

After the 2nd time it was time to test to see what was going on. I did the same exact thing but this time took her right up to 8000 red line, and she shifted like butter. I then tried again going back to the 7500 mark, and again grind.

Two questions:
- What is wrong?
- How do I fix it?

Thanks

John

I'm interested in this too. I had the same problem in MY04 and now in MY05. It's kind of embarrasing when you're trying to show off for a friend and blast away on a redlight only to be heard grinding 2nd. I never noticed what RPM range it did it in, but I can only guess it's high b/c it never does it when I'm taking it easy.

I've heard 2nd gear grind stories, but most are where the guy takes his back to the dealer and they do something big or expensive. Is there any fix that can be done at home?

Use the 'Search' feature. You will find hundreds of threads if you search for "Friction Modified".

Is that stuff save for the 04+. I know they mentioned that some tranny fluids will harm the 04's b/c of the carbon fiber synchros.

I'm not saying GMSFM is necessarily going to be the best choice, but it works for some, and it is safe for the '04 box. Every S2000 tranny seems to have its own "right" fluid. I suggested searching for "Friction Modified" because that appears in just about every thread pertaining to grinding.

I have FM tranny fluid, and I have used the search for this. I have read a ton about grinding from 1st to 2nd but that is a lower rpm. I have not read anything with it being so close to redline but not at redline, that is why I asked.

Thanks

John
Sounds to me like you might be better off with the OEM fluid if you weren't grinding on it.

Thanks, I understand. It is just frustrating at times when someone just says use the search button. I have read a ton of posts on tranny fluid. I hope that is not the problem, but I am not sure, that is why I am asking. Maybe this is a common problem. It just doesn't make since to me that it happens at 7500 but not at 8000.

That definity may be true but I don't want to give up on my GMSFM yet. I love the way it shifts and I have only had it in my car for 1000 miles, but this just started to happen yesterday. It is not that I shift at 7500 often, usually it is right at redline but some times if you are just trying to get around someone you short shift, so who know it may have been like this the whole time.
