When is the Caliper rebuild necessary?
I need to replace my pads, cut the rotors, and change the brake fluid. I do nto have the caliper rebuild kit and its a Sunday so I can't go to the dealer to buy the kit. So my question is when is it necessary to rebuild the calipers? Should that be something that is done at every brake job? How woul I know if I need to do that? Meaning I do not want to tkae everything off today and find out I need to rebuild a caliper and I do not have the kit. Thanks!
I would do a rebuild if there were signs of leakage, signs of boot damage, stickiness in the piston movement, signs of rust. Regular maintenance (like fluid changes) should keep these sorts of things at bay. Whenever I do pads and rotors, I'll have a real good inspection of these things. I'll even spray a bit of silicone onto the visible bits of rubber boot to help condition and preserve them.
thanks xviper! Since I am the second owner of the car I guess I will order the rebuild kit anyway and do it. That way I know that it was done and that I do not have to worry about it. I just got the itch to do it since it is almost 50 degrees by me so I thought it would be a good day to do it.
