Default When should you switch to synthetic motor oil?

I just picked up my ap2 S last week with 5000 miles on it, and just to be safe I want to change the oil, because I'm not sure when it was done last. How long do you all suggest before i switch to synthetic? I plan on running Mobil 1 10w30 and either a Mobil 1 filter or OEM filter. Thanks.

Doesn't really matter. Just don't do it after 70k or so, as your seals can break down easier. Synthetic absorbs into the seals much more than dino oil.

BTW: The old saying that you can't switch between the two (Syn & old dino oil) is a myth as well...

pretty much personal preference. i know friends that changed to it after 2k, after 5k, and 10k. its really up to you. it shouldnt harm the engine if youre doing it properly and at the right OCI

It used to be written in the owners manual to wait until the 2nd scheduled oil change before changing to synthetic, ie about 12k miles. At some point in production that recommendation was dropped.

My 2005 manual says 3750mi under severe use, 7000mi under normal. It also says synth is ok if it meets the API ratings. I changed mine @ 1500 miles with Mobil1and it has NEVER needed more oil between OCI!

10k seems reasonable and also seems to be the concensus of this forum. I did the 10k change to synthetic and feel comfortable with this interval.
