Whimpy horn
What to replace my horn with something that doesn't sound like an mouse going through puberty. Do all car horns work off the same voltage ? Can I just splice the OEM plug to a diff horn?

Yes, pretty much anything electrical in any car runs off 12vdc. So any car horn will work.
You can buy aftermarket louder horns. Its a thing. These horns are not much larger than stock. Motorcyclists like them, as they want to sound like a much larger vehicle in times of urgency and their stock horns are as wimpy as they come. |
Early S2000s came with one horn, I cant remember if it's a high of low tone.
You can add a second tone horn from later years (so you have one high and one low) and the sound will increase substantially. I have an AP1/AP2 horn mix and its more than loud enough. |
The horn on my '00 was so weak it was worthless so I replaced it, but did have a bit of an issue as brake lights were on that circuit and it could not handle the new horns. Had to use a relay on the circuit and power the horns separately.

My 2007 came with this horn: UCH-253. Pretty darn loud for OEM. Loudest in work parking lot --- arming and when stupid alarm goes off, by itself.

Look here,
I own a 2001 with that single wimpy horn as well. I highly recommend what Hardtopguy sells, which worked perfectly for our "s". He advertises it as an upgrade for the 2016 Honda Civic which came with a single horn just like our "s" AP1 00-01 years and replaces it with an dual horn setup from 2016 MDX model. It includes an adapter-harness so you can add that additional secondary horn. Sounds very good IMO that make it sound a bit more aggressive with a grunt with just a tap on the steering wheel horn which I think is perfect for the "s". It was an easy and straight-forward install with instructions for $50, it was definitely a nice upgrade that you can't go wrong. I decided these against PIAA's and Hella's in mind. Here I attached a link https://hardtopguy.com/store/2016-20...n-upgrade.html |

Do you have to remove the fender to access the stock horn? Does the hardtopguy horn replace the oem horn, or does it add on? thanks

For wiring, splice a parallel path from your OEM horn. AP2's have dual tone horns on the inner fender and radiator support. The AP1 horn is on the radiator support. Its a single tone horn. Buy a low frequency horn to support your high tone factory horn. |
I have a 2001 AP1. I want to upgrade the horn to something like what the 2004+ horn sounds like. Thanks
The horn kit from hardtopguy sounds promising as another user mentioned. |

120 or 118 Decibel.
I had the Supertones in my del Sol. Great fun in Summrnights with bicyclist in the City wich thinks that red lights are not for them... |
Coming from the Subaru community, Hella Supertones were on almost EVERYONES car at some point. Nice and loud.

I kinda like the AP2 horn (2009). It sounds just like the horns from the nicer cars I rent/drive in Europe. Very "sport car" like. Of course in America you need something from Peterbuilt.

Had the bumper off this past weekend to install the new OEM headlights and decided to replace the OEM horns since I would have easy access to the lower horn. Not sure if this is already known; however, I was able to locate a Hella duel horn duel tone set on Amazon with Honda specific plugs. This made it truly plug and play … cost was only $19 with prime. Only item I reused from the OEM horns was the mounting tab since the OEM tab was slightly shorter and made for better spacing. Hope this helps … great little mod.
Here is the part if interested - HELLA 012010911 Black 12V BX Trumpet Horn Kit (Honda) |
The Nathan K5LA (as used on Amtrak locomotives) will get everyone's attention. There's room for the 5 gallon air compressor in the trunk.
