Default Whining noise from gearbox

So i never noticed this before but when my car is in first gear and the clutch is in, there is whining noise thats not too loud but noticable coming from the gearbox. This only happens in first gear too. It never happens in gear either, it only whines when the clutch is pressed in first gear. Is this normal. I never heard it before so im kinda worried. Also, another thing ive never noticed till recently, when the clutch is pressed, my car is quieter. When i let go of the clutch (in nuetral), it gets louder and sounds like its letting out air somewhere.

Can someone tell me what im hearing or feeling?

do you have gears other then oem? your oem might be going bad, eating a tooth or something, or your bearings could be bad.

It may be the tail shaft bearings, there are 3 of them at the end of the oil supply and gaul from lack of oil. Its some what of a common problem. my MY 00 ap-1 does also. you can have a mechanic listen to it and diagnos it from there, replace all 3 of them, is what a mechanic suggested to me. there was a thread here a while back, and the dealer charged about $800 to do the work, IIRC. Maybe someone has a link to it. BTW a little extra oil in the tranny oil may help.

well if you really wanted to you could crack open the differential and count how many teeth are on the ring gear. your get your gear ratio (i.e 4.10(stock) or like 4.77) by dividing the number of teeth on the ring gear by the teeth on the pinion. but thats a lot of work, you might want to take it somewhere and hav them check it out, but gonna cost $$$

you can hear the noise when you put your ear closer to the shift boot. and the whine only comes when its in first gear, cluth pressed and car rolling. when the car stops, the noise stops. My car is under mitsubishi warranty, maybe ill have them check it out but knowing mitsubishi, they'll probably break it even more .lol

I just had a class about this. It is your pinion depth is a little bit off. but it is common for cars to have a certain range where they whine. you have nothing to worry about.

There was a post about this a while back: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...0&#entry8432597

I have an '05 and have the first gear whine.

There is also a member with a '06 with the same whine.

I believe it is normal, and think it's cool.
