Default whirring, fluttering sound ~2k-4k

Howdy,

I'm getting kind of a whirring/fluttering sound related to engine rpm. Don't hear it at idle, not 'til maybe 1800 rpm, and not after ~4k (perhaps drowned out by general engine noise). I only hear it in the lower gears. I've listened to clips of the timing chain tensioner rattle, and I don't think that's what it is (open to being wrong here). It doesn't seem to be related to load.

What do ya think?

pinch the vacuum line that goes from the intake manifold to ur pcv on top of ur head... see if that is the sound u r hearing. if it is, pcv is bad or leaky vacuum line. could b a number of things, but pcv is easy to chk and inexpensive. most likely ur tct tho, which is normal.

Edit: Sorry, I have selective reading disfunction. Didn't see that it isn't audible at idle. Try reving with clutch engaged and disengaged. My clutch makes noise that is audible with no load. I push the clutch pedal to the floor and it goes away. I believe it to be clutch buzz.

Can you post a vid with sound so we can hear it? That'll really help with internet diagnosis.

s2000 whir/flutter

Not exactly pro quality...
Oh yeah, ignore those pesky ABS and check engine lights...

I noticed when taking video that the noise only manifests itself when the clutch is engaged. The noise is partially load-related, when I allow the car to "buck" by getting on and off the throttle with the clutch engaged it is emphasized momentarily. However, smoothly applied load even with max throttle doesn't make it any noisier, perhaps less so.

In the video it sounds like straight-cut gears, but in real life it sounds more "fluttery" and less like gear noise.

That sound is very similar to what I heard as my original diff was dying. But I assume this noise is coming from the front and not the rear of the car.

The fluttering could either be from a chipped tooth or a carrier allowing the gear assembly to vibrate. I'd bet that applies to trannies as well as diffs. So if the noise is coming from the front, then it may be the gear box.

You might PM PuddyDad to get his opinion as well.

Let us know what you find.

Since you mentioned the TCT possibility, check the top bolt on the bellhousing. You can see it using a flashlight between the back of the engine and the firewall, at least from the passenger's side. I had a noise I was convinced was the TCT that turned out to be this bolt backed out and contacting the firewall. Didn't happen all the time but would usually be consistent for a few days. Never at idle, usually on on acceleration (just before I found the problem I was getting a rattle on deceleration).

This was caused by having the clutch replaced under warranty and the bolt not being properly tightened on reassembly (regardess of the dealer trying to tell me that "bolts can back out after a while"). If you've never had the bellhousing off, never mind...
